How to activate an eSIM

The activation steps are nearly identical across every provider we track. This covers the general process and the failure modes that account for most support tickets, independent of which provider you picked.

The general steps

1. Buy the plan and get a QR code or activation link, usually by email. 2. On your phone, go to cellular/mobile settings and choose "add eSIM" or "add data plan." 3. Scan the QR code or use the activation link. 4. Give the new line a label and choose whether it's your primary line for calls/texts (usually you'll keep your regular SIM as primary and use the eSIM only for data). 5. Turn on data roaming for the new eSIM line specifically, since it's off by default on most phones.

Before you travel, not after you land

Install the eSIM profile while you still have WiFi, ideally a day or two before departure. Most eSIM activation requires an internet connection to complete, and airport WiFi on arrival is not something to count on. The plan itself typically only starts counting data once you actually connect to a network abroad, so installing early doesn't waste your validity window.

The most common failure: one eSIM per physical slot

Most phones support multiple eSIM profiles stored, but only one or two active at a time depending on the model. If activation silently fails, the most common cause is that the phone has hit its limit of active lines rather than anything wrong with the eSIM itself. Removing an old, unused eSIM profile before installing a new one resolves this in most cases.

If you have no signal after landing

Check that data roaming is on for the eSIM line specifically (a separate toggle from your main line), and that network selection is set to automatic rather than a manually-picked carrier. A plan can be active and correctly installed while still showing no service if the phone is stuck trying to connect to the wrong local network.
